3.0 KZTE IFS Hilux Woes
Hi All,
I'm new to this forum and this is only my 2nd post.
I have a bit of a dilemma with KZTE , seems that the diesel pump stiffened up and nearly though the cam through the tappet cover. Keep in mind that the belt is intact still.
I have removed the head and found no trace of contact between the pistons and valves.
What would you suggest i do as finding parts for a KZTE is a nightmare and pricey.
Do I fix the KZTE or do I replace the motor with a petrol turbocharged?
lastly who is reliable in Cape Town if i decide to fix the motor.
Thank You

Jeez that's impressive.
Give Allan Venter a call - 0seven2 one2nine 11six0 - he is the Hilux whisperer and knows these motors backwards.
Possibly also query from him whether to swap out the head whilst you're at it as apparently the earlier model heads were prone to cracking...
Lucky with the belt!

Head will require replacing , all the cam caps are damaged , and so is the head as the bolts ripped out.Tim86 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:06 pm Jeez that's impressive.

I have a clean 1JZTE in my garage with the engine mount and original computer box and fuse box.
Not sure how it will before off-road though , I don't do any hectic trails but more for sandy and semi gravel stony roads to access the good fishing spots.

The 1JZ was a good motor but getting old now and spares will also be a problem, so I would stick with the KZ and do the repairs ... should cost a helluva lot less than a conversion even if you already have the motor. Will also help to retain the resale value if it's the original motor as opposed to a conversion. The AMC head is a better option than an OEM one from Toyota.

Any other mechanics recommended in Cape Town?
I enjoyed the van with the KZTE lump and would like to revive the little beast as its used a lot on family trips.

Alan suggested that I rather fix my motor.
Plan is to fit the AMC head and Colt diesel pump.
Does the Colt pump make any difference to performance and consumption on the KZTE?

Van is currently in for repairs at Allan, we decided to do a complete rebuild of the motor.
We received the new cylinder head and had to replace all the timing gears and timing covers.

Re: 3.0 KZTE IFS Hilux Woes
How viable is it to put the Cruiser Diesel V8 motor from the Cruiser bakkie into an IFS, once they start becoming available from Japan?

I can not see that it is easily possible, let alone viable.Cheetah Drakie wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2019 12:49 pm How viable is it to put the Cruiser Diesel V8 motor from the Cruiser bakkie into an IFS, once they start becoming available from Japan?
Sure, if you have deep pockets anything is possible but why go through all the trouble and spend upwards of R250k(that was the last figure I heard for a V8 conversion into a Cruiser) on a conversion where you could rather sell the Hilux(+-R100k) plus the R250k and look for something already running for R300-350k?
Maybe I am getting old but recently I am more and more leaning towards keeping things as standard as possible(yes, I'd go for a unichip, bigger tyres and suspension) and taking life easy!

Re: 3.0 KZTE IFS Hilux Woes
Bliksem II Didn't realise the engines were that expensive.
Yes that does make sense. Pity, that motor sure sounds sweet. Well, should I ever go the engine replacement route I will look at a cheaper alternative, or as you say, sell my IFS. I wouldn't want to, the IFS has been a remarkable vehicle.
Thanks for the input.

Re: 3.0 KZTE IFS Hilux Woes
It's not just the motor that pushes the cost up. It's all the little extras (some bigger ones) that you have to buy to make it all come together and then there's the many hours of labour that go into it.
Take a Lexus V8 conversion for example .... you can source a 1 UZ for as little as 12k but the conversion is going to cost you upwards of 65k before you're done. Before you even get as far as fitting the motor it has to be opened and checked, gaskets replaced and belts replaced ..... and that's only if there's nothing else that's suspect and needs attention like water pump, valve stem seals, rings, ignition coils, etc, etc.

True story
It all adds up, and that is if all goes smoothly. Hmmm nah, I think I will keep Lux as is. With the full SAC conversion, she isn't lazy at all.

Re: 3.0 KZTE IFS Hilux Woes
The 1JZ is an old motor now ... spares could be a problem ... good motors though and that straight 6 had plenty torque. If you marry it to the standard SFA box you'll have to drive like an old man if you don't want to strip the box over time. KZ box will handle it fine.
There are a number of guys that did that conversion years back, you would have to do a search on "1JZ conversion".

Just an update, completed my 1st long distance trip with the 1jzgte hilux with zero issues.
Far lighter on fuel compared to the KZTE and what a pleasure to drive with all that power.
Did a 4x4 trail in Knysna too.
