Hi, I need to replace the release bearing on my 4x4 Vigo, which means I might as well replace clutch, plate and bearings and seals,
my question is this, can the gearbox be slid backwards on the cross member enough to get to the clutch, without having to drop the box completely?
I know about the posts talking about removing the cross member and the box completely, some even mention removing the engine instead of dropping the box.
But I have had a look and see enough space to be able to shift the box back on the cross member and just support the bell housing.
any advice?

Hi Basil, Long time no see.
Man, I cant really speak for the Vigo but the box has to be slid back in line and not allow the spigot shaft to take stress and in my experience it's difficult to do that with the x-member in place .... just gets in the way. Then I don't think there will be enough space to move it back far enough before the bell comes up against the x-member. Even if you get it free and resting on the x-member, how are you going to work in there and get the pressure plate and clutch plate off? Remember you have to get it all clear of the spigot shaft to slip the release bearing off .... don't see you getting it right. Even if by some chance you do, then you might not be able to line up the new clutch plate with a locating dowel coz there probably wont be enough space to get it in.
Rather get a helper and a big trolley jack and take the box out altogether.
