Hilux KZTE Speedo Cable - Help Please

Post by Herlu »

Hi,

I need to install a new speedo cable for my 2001 Hilux DC.

I can see where to fit it to the gearbox, but are not sure how to get the other end fixed to the speedo needle. Do I need to take out the whole dash, or is there a shortcut?

Anyone done this before?

Thanks
Herlu

Sorry but you will have to take out the dash to get to the other end.Its a lekker Saterday morning joppie. Why do you want to replace the cable? Is it broken or is the needle "jumping".

Hi Hentey,

Yep, it's jumping at lower speeds. Maybe worth while to wait a bit until its really bad.

Do I feed the cable from the gearbox through the firewall into the back of the dash, or from the dash through the firewall down to the gearbox?

Thanks for the help.

You need to disconnect it at both ends and then degrease it.Inspect the inner cable and if in good condition,re-use it (thats normally the case).I had my Lux's cable done and saved +- R750 on a new cable. If the needle jumps,it is only dry.

This jumping is (in my experience) the beginning of the end for your speedo. Removing-cleaning-relubricating it, is only going to make a marginal difference, and in the end it is going to snap without warning, like mine did.

Best thing to do is order a new cable (around R800 from the agents <if they have stock - I found only 1 in all of Cape Town>) and replace it.

The new one comes with the outer sleeve as well, so you would need to strip out the WHOLE old cable, by detatching it from the transfer case and the rear of the speedo cluster.

I have written a how-to for it, since I photographed the whole process when I replaced mine. As soon as it is done, I will upload it onto the site (same as what I did for the IFS door panels). That should help you along. Look here: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=11471" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Removing the speedo on the IFS Hilux is not SUCH a BIG job. Yes, it involves removing quite a few screws, but it is not a case of removing the whole dash! And detaching the cable is easy, because it is held only by 1 palstic clip to the back of the speedo.

Send me a PM if you need more help with this.

No problem, besides, I enjoy writing these articles when I need to do something on my lux.

Let us know how things turn out.

BTW the cable from the agents is around R750 - I bought mine from Toyota in Observatory, because they were the only agent in the whole Western Cape that had any!
