Groot plesier Wayne,

Nice recovery! Never an enjoyable feeling being stranded like that! One minor criticism, Wayne's vehicle should have had it's bonnet up as well, if a shackle comes loose or a recovery rope snaps, it could be deadly!

You're 100% correct, a pic can never do those side slopes/angles any justice, but attempted to correct the horizon line in one pic... makes it look hectic:

Thanks B.that puts a better spin on things.

regarding the bonnet being open or not.it probably is safer, but the danger will be more towards the vehicle that is doing the winching(Tuna).I also see in the video they used safety lanyards and shock dampers. IMHO the deadly flying shackle comes really into play when you are doing snatching.

Like I said it's a minor criticism. You must take the terrain under foot into consideration as well, lots of small/medium size loose rock/pebbles... add that to some decent wheel spin and you have another type of possible flying projectile. I maintain, for safety sake, if the vehicles are participating in a recovery are facing each other, both bonnets must be up.

Agreed, Bretton. As you call it, "a minor criticism", but I would prefer to look upon it as a helpful hint. The kinetic strap is a dangerous piece of equipment to be sure, but don't under estimate the amount of tension that can be built up in a strap either. A cable is a lot safer but can still whiplash whilst a chain is probably the safest, but not practical due to weight an bulk. The other issue with bonnets is visibility .... sometimes it may be the lesser of two evils to have the visibility if there is no-one to guide you ... depends on the circumstances.

Glad you guys got out without further incident.

Hindsight is a perfect science BUT a lower tyre pressure would surely have made the recovery easier?

From what I can see the ground under foot was lots of smallish round pebbles / rocks on hardish loose dirt. If this is the case, it's almost as slippery as ice and no matter the tyre pressure it was always going to be difficult to get that bakkie out at that angle.. m2cw
