1998 SFA Diesel Conversion Input
Hey fellow Hilux'ers
Been contemplating this for a while, I have a 1998 LTD SFA with the 22R motor that I want to do a diesel swop into. I am sure this topic has been discussed plenty before but I want some current input from guys who have done the conversion as well as any other input. I have driven a SFA with a 5L motor in and wasn't overly impressed as it was somewhat slow. I am looking at the WL25 or KZTE motor, leaning towards the KZTE though(want to keep it all Toyota). This will most likely be done later in the year.
I get decent consumption from my 22R, averaging between 7.5KM/L and 8.5KM/L but want a diesel. Used to own a Legend 35 KZTE which I loved but sadly it was written off. Please don't suggest a V8 cause I already have one and don't need another .
So, what factors need to be taken into account, eg mounting, cooling, diffs, gearbox... etc. Any indication of costs? I have spoken to Hoppy quickly about this but would like some more input from fellow members.
Thanks in advance

When you say off the shelf, you mean for the conversion or in terms of spares?dustbuster wrote:WL 2.5 is the you can buy every thing off the shelf

Bell housing - Fana (can give you his number)
engine mounts - Hoppy
Clutch is the 2.7
radiator - KZTE
bit off mods and engine is in and the WL2.5 has no ECU and is easy to wire up
I debated the Toyota thing but the WL is a good motor and goes in like a glove the exhaust and air inlet is on the correct side.

Have not done it myself, but I understand that the WL is the better option. Kz is not so high revving and much more complicated than the WL. Me thinks the WL is lighter too.

Won't the D4D also fit ( with a little effort).
A forum member mentioned to me that if he were to do a conversion again this would be it.
Personally I know too little to really know.

Re: 1998 SFA Diesel Conversion Input
I'm used to the petrol ones Had a few 2.2 4Ys and 2.4 22Rs , one 2.4 2L2 TD, and now driving my brothers 2.8 TD
I Will again buy a SFA but if i had a choice it will be the Diesel
Fuel consumption torque etc.
If i had the Option of a conversion I'll Pass on the KZ - Reason being you'll have to do gear ratios to be successful
2.5 WL with 33" tires i believe is a winner cording to the research I've done
The 2.8 is up for sale

Thanks for the feedback guys. Not planning on big tyres as the Bakkie spends a lot of time on the road.
Hmmm had my heart set on keeping all Toyota but by the sounds of it the WL25 is the way to go
Any more input/experience is appreciated

Re: 1998 SFA Diesel Conversion Input
I have the following to say... I didnt have a WL in a Hilux conversion, but I did have a Hilux gearbox coupled to a WL in my Ford Ranger... The combination of the WL and the Hilux gearbox works verry verry nicely... Very responsive, and overtaking is easy, even with a load..

Nico it was a LUK,but as I found out there is three different flywheels for the KZTE/D4d.When I phoned around the recessed flywheel that had the 260mm clutch plate was the expensive one.the one I have in is the 250mm non recessed flywheel.

I hope that your one is foing to last. if you put the 2x4 clutch kid in 4x4 it may not last as long as you would like.Scott wrote:Nico it was a LUK,but as I found out there is three different flywheels for the KZTE/D4d.When I phoned around the recessed flywheel that had the 260mm clutch plate was the expensive one.the one I have in is the 250mm non recessed flywheel.

Re: 1998 SFA Diesel Conversion Input
I have done this conversion and am over the moon with the WL it has plenty power and it alot lighter on fuel than the 2.2 4Y and the V6, I am running 33" tyres, 50mm body lift and a suspension lift and have NO problems with it.Moonunit wrote:Thanks for the feedback guys. It is a very easy conversion, mine has the standard 2.2 4Y engine mountings.
Just make sure you get your radiator converted to handle the heat.
The temp switch works the std temp guage on the toyota and is accurate.
Redo the injectors and make sure you replace the thermostat.
The fuel lines are big enough to supply the correct amount of fuel, to the motor.
I run 110km on the highway and dont need to gear down to keep it at 110km on a hill
The ony thing I have not managed to do is the rev counter, still need to figure that one out.
good luck and have fun with the diesel......
