99 hilux diff centre noise
Hi,
I have just replaced the diff centre in my 99 hilux 3ltr deisel 5L motor. the 4.5 ratio diff
centre I put in was a rcon'd one. After putting it in it is sometimes making a high pitch whining noise
mainly when slowing down or going down hill. Also there is a bit of oil coming out of the
breather.
Is this normal? I've heard that the cheaper diffs can whine a bit.

scott,
cheap or not - no diff should whine!
if there is any whining noise, it shows you it is not set up correctly and it is not going to last.
take it back and ask the supplier if you paid with whining money...

+1 No wining. Its means the backlash on the diff is too big. Other possibility is the carrier bearings were not replaced the same time when the crown wheel & pinion were.

Re: 99 hilux diff centre noise
Back lash means it is the space between the pinion gear and the ring gear. Its is the mesh of the teeth. Now it its too big you get the whine you hear. If it is set too small you wont even turn the diff, if you get it too turn with torque it will break the teeth.
Usually the back lash get measured with a dail gauge, this measurement should be 0.15 to 0.25mm. That is why you will always install new carrier bearings, set the gap to the smallest value-= 0.15mm. This allows for play for wear on the bearings.
No it don't have any thing to do with gear ratios.

Ok cool thanks I understand that now. Someone told me today that it could be the gears running in? But I think I'll contact the suplier and see what they have to say about it I just want to sell it but not with a noisey diff.
