Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
Hello All
Has any one done a D4D to 4.0l V6 conversions on a Mk7 Hilux? If so please cn you sent me the links.
I am hoping that all the mounts, spaces, fuel tanks...... are all the same between the two engines but I have no idea so an info would be great.
Many thanks

Isn't it easier to sell the one and buy the other?
D4D fetch better price than 4 Liter.

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
I have done alot of work to mine already. Stuff like bumpers, suspension, dual batteries, long range tank, lights........... It seems easier to swap the engine then to swap all the rest lol Plus my car was imported from the UK so I am not sure if that effects the resale value.
Was hoping to find a rolled 2013-15 for cheap and use it as a doer vehicle

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
diesel and petrol have different rev ranges .... so you are also looking at replacing the complete drive train.
basically taking the shell off a D-4D and putting your shell on it
as you said, get a rolled bakkie and start playing .....

I am sure that the physical swap wont be to difficult. My main concern is the ECU. I assume that there is a engine loom and a main car loom. I am hoping that the connection between the engine loom and car loom is the same regardless of the engine. I did an engine swap in a Ford Fiesta years ago and had a nightmare getting the engine loom to work with the car

The Ecu will differ from petrol to diesel. Your console ie the rev counter have to be replaced too.

But do you think the connection and wiring between the car loom and the engine loom will be the same? So all I will need to do is plug the V6 engine loom into the existing car loom? Or do you think they might be complete different?

I doubt it will be the same. The junction blocks and wire harness connectors might be different.climbingmike wrote:But do you think the connection and wiring between the car loom and the engine loom will be the same? And then you also sit with the dissimilar splice points and relay blocks.
Just a question Mike: What is the reason for exchanging to the V6?

I just want more power on the road. I chipped my D4D and now it is acceptable but not really enough. Plus my current engine has done 240K Km so thought it might need changing in the not to distant future.

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
I would take all the extras out of the d4d and build the over on a V6. Its going to be cheaper, less problems and quicker. But thats just me.
Just a side note, i've seen d4d's over 400k km on the clock with no problems.

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
Hi Mike,
Firstly, what chip is in your truck? What else has been done to better the performance?
An engine swop will not be viable - if you had issues with an Fiesta(relative simple electronics) just imaging how complicated the newer technology will be...
BUT anything can be done - depending on the size of your wallet!
Buying a wrecked V6 and swopping every bit over can be done but will take time, lots and lots of time. And then some.
Lets rather have a look at the current setup and maybe enhance that?

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
I just have a Race Chip http://www.racechip.co.za/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; thats all. Its much better then it was but I would just like more :) The problem I have this that if I replace the truck with a V6, I have to pay full price for a working truck and then move all the mods of my onto the new one. Then I am left with a D4D which I cant sell because it has not bumpers, suspension, audio kit..... Ideally I would just like more power from the D4D but one of the reasons for looking at replacing the engine was it has done a few miles now and sounds like a tractor. So I dont want to stress an old engine.
Do you think an engine swap would be that bad? I was thinking that as the engine is designed to be in there and would have a dona truck, the engine and engine wiring loom could just be transplanted. This would renew new truck as the only thing I am worried about failing in the future is the engine or gear box.
I might go and speak with my Toyota mechanic and see if they can give me some details about the difference between the to engines.
Or I could just see if I can import a 2016 Ford F-150 Raptor! I dread to think how much that would cost lol

Oh no!!
A racechip is defintely not all that can be done - there are way better chips and some other mods.
How does 175kw from a D4D sound?

Once I converted it into BHP it sounds good. What sort of Mods and cost would I be looking at to achieve this?

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
I'm sorry to say but I don't think it will be that easy. (Plug and play)
I had to change the full harness on my 2.7 and it was a total nightmare.
There were 3 or 4 different harnesses just for that year model.
At that stage I had a contact in Toyota and could go to the parts warehouse to search for the correct one.
Even after all of that I still had to modify a few connections.
I'm sure with a enough information and lots of patience it can be done, but I would also say try and get the best from the D4D first

Re: Engine conversion D4D to 4.0 V6
Mike,
The road to decent power is not that difficult or expensive!
Firstly, take a nice drive down to the waterfront. Park in a safe spot and open the bonnet. Now safley disconnect the racechip. Walk down to the water. Now toss that crap far, far away. Smile and walk away.
Right, now the first thing is to have your injectors tested. If not yet done, at 240 000km they should be the source of of the under performance and noisy engine.
Once that is sorted order a front mounted intercooler from Motorcade. Installation is DIY.
Now for the next step(2 in 1)which is where you will see the biggest gains. Phone Dastek and make a booking to have a 76mm Freeflow exhaust and chip installed.
Earlier I talked about 175kw. This is doable with all the mods mentioned but only recommended if you truck has an automatic transmission. On the manual the clutch can not handle more than 150kw reliably.
Happy tuning!
