Cold start-up idling not the same

Post by Klonkies »

Morning everybody,

Im not sure if the Swine-flue got into my Hilux, or if it was the recent mud, but she doesnt want to idle at cold start. Normally, the bakkie would idle at around 2000rpm for a while - then drop down to normal idling speed. Now, nothing - i have to keep my foot on the petrol after i swing the key and wait till she decides she`s warm enough to idle on her own.....

Any thoughts, please help?

oh - i should also add, the airduct between the carburator and airfilter is broken again. I checked the engine mountings, all ok - but during rev`ing the airduct is under massive stress indicating a blockage in the airfilter side, but its a new filter? ... :wth:

Mehl... it very possible that the fact that your engine won't fast idle on start-up is directly related to the restricted airflow... if the engine isn't breathing properly it aint going to idle properly...

Very easy Mehl, he wants you to take a picture of your bakkie not idling.... Please be sure to capture the coldness and the lack of idling when taking the picture in order to allow the experts to pin-pont your problem by looking at what is or is not in the picture.

OH? ... sorry i missed that one... :o: guess i should use the flash too otherwise i might just discover another problem hey?!

but serious, i opened up the air filter bracket and found nothing restricting air flow... could be that the filter got wet during the last Dirt and Dust weekend, but could that muddy waterstill restrict the filter now that its dry??

just take the filter out and see if it still does not want to idle... then you'll know whether it is the filter restricting the airflow or not. oh and remember to take a picture of the filter as well...

Hey, Caution......... :!: :!:

Wear a strong elbow length leather glove (on your non camera hand)

if that's a K&N Air Filter in there you'll soon find the small bird/dassie that's living in your air pipe

Try and blow the air filter out with compressed air, from the inside out... if that doesn't work...

Take a picture of it... that might fix it!

It's also possible you got a bit of muck on the linkages of the carb, and the fast idle cam is now not engaging... try clean the carb exterior with a tin of carb cleaner... let it dry and spray with something like WD40/WynFlon to lube the bits again!

To test it the fast idle is engaging depress the petrol pedal all the way and release slowly, before starting the engine... this assists the fast idle cam to engage...

Driving through dust and mud eventually clogs the choke and "idle up" links on the side of the carb where all the links are.
Some carb cleaner and spook pis (Q20) should do the trick.
The idle up adjustment on the 22R is hidden, you have to floor the throttle (engine swithed off) and look just left and below the normal idle adjustment screw, turn it in a half a turn at a time and check it.
Take the air filter top off and make sure the choke flap closes when it's cold (you have to floor the throtle to activate it)

Phone "Racers edge" or one of these "look fast go slow" shops and replace the intake hose with silicone bends, it's still cheaper than Toyota and it will last longer.
