Hilux occasionally does not start - Any advise?

Post by JustinBr »

Hi

I have a 1993 2.2 petrol DC hilux 4x4.

Recently I have been experiencing some slight starter problems.

When turning the ignition, there is sometimes a slight delay before the vehicle starts. Not always, just sometimes.

Last weekend it didn't start at all. There was no click noise, so I assume the starter motor is fine.
After a quick running start everything is working fine again, despite the occasional delay when turning the ignition.

The battery is rather new (1 year).

What could the causes be? I'm guessing solenoid...But, how do I know?

Thanks,
Justin

One Question.

Do you have a alarm system with central locking in it?

No, I do however have a jippo'd security key system. So, you have to push this rod into the holder before starting the car. But, this has been short circuited due to the annoyance factor.

Start by taking out the starter solenoid and just clean and lightly grease the "piston". I once had a sticky starter I sorted out that way, after the starter motor and battery proved to be ok.

Ok, thanks. That's the chuck of metal that the positive terminal runs to? My Haynes manual's picture doesn't look exactly like anything in my bonnet...

Yep, your positive's connected to it. I used a thin layer of multi purpose grease.

Is the solenoid attached to the starter motor?

Quite often the starter solenoid contacts stop working and the starter then fails to turn. If you remove the solenoid you can bench test it.
Happy trails
