First Time Welder Purchaser - Advice Needed!
Hi All
I have a little problem:/
Hence I need the correct welding appliance for such a repair. There are a number of posts addressing welding but the numerous terms (often for the same thing) confuse me and I need to ensure I fork out the not inconsiderable sum for the right thing.
I have self taught experience in welding with a very old stick/arc welder to the point of welding dropped drag links and just managing to stitch together exhaust pipe etc. I am looking at purchasing a cheap (3-4k max) MIG welder and initially running it with flux core to save on gas. I will eventually aim to use it with gas and to weld aluminium & stainless steel but the immediate aim is thin bodywork - am I on the right track?
Additionally, is flux core suitable for bodywork and is flux core available for aluminium and stainless?
Many Thanks!

Rather go to an body shop. Welding thin body panels generally requires TIG welding, which is expensive and takes a lot of practice

Or get a Oxy-acytelene set. Can't believe how thin plate can be welded with it.

At over R8K for a 2nd hand PortaPack (small unit) I don't think the cost can be justified unless it's going to be used for business. Same applies to a TIG / MIG welder IMO.

Yes, 63k, pocket change!
Seriously though, cheap with welding means SMAW (stick/arc) and you really can't weld thin plate with it. So you're either in for a large investment in time and money learning to TIG or outsourcing it.

Re: First Time Welder Purchaser - Advice Needed!
The whole idea with both MIG and TIG welding is that there is an inert gas protecting the weld from contamination by oxygen. So the flux core on the MIG welder is somewhat of a compromise although I am not in a position to comment on the real world application thereof as I do not know. Perhaps someone else will have used it and can comment.
The problem with something like TIG welding which is probably the best welding solution for the job you want to do is that the TIG welding machines are expensive and just like anything else in life you get what you paid for it. Then there is the ongoing cost of the inert gas and the rental on the cylinder that you are already clearly aware of. If you are only going to do it once or occasionally then it will not be worth your while to buy the whole setup. If you are going to be using it frequently on other jobs then it becomes more of an option. If you only want to weld up the cab then you are much better off financially to have it done professionally.
There are cheap TIG welders that cost in the same ball park as the cheap MIG welders but I have no experience with them. If you were in a position to choose between the two then the MIG welder is in my opinion the best solution.

In Silverton close to the corner of Pretoriaweg and Dykorweg, is a big shop (can't remember the name) they sell tig ac/dc for 10000. Think is better quality than the one at Adendorf.

Re: First Time Welder Purchaser - Advice Needed!
Thanks for the advice guys, I've been busy for the last four months or so.
I decided to buy the cheapest MIG from Adendorff for a whopping 3K and run flux core - I would rather do it myself and learn the process instead of paying someone. In hindsight this was a good idea, the labour/time involved would have run into the tens of thousands. Also opted to run my new R300.00 spraygun off dad's old dive tanks to save on a compressor.
The instigator - opening the drivers door and seeing this every time drove me nuts! A VW Golf kindly donated some door: Bonnet rust welded up: Wet sanding: Extra weight of the glass placed in newly repaired door caused it to slide off and hit the ground:/ Extra work: This little crack... Turns into this, look at the filler on the gutter rails!!! Reasonably straight Other side Filler: Filling dive tanks

You did a damn fine job there with the MIG Tim.
Wanting a TIG for meself for many years,
it was always the problem of the shielding gas that came in the way.
But I must say - that MIG spots looks real nice!

Nic out of interest this truck came with factory floor insulation - see pic. Some pretty heavy duty bituminous stuff! Also some Flashband in the front doors where PO fitted speakers (out of sight). Would you recommend Flashband to complete the job? I'm not too keen to insert messy insulation fibre in there.

Re: First Time Welder Purchaser - Advice Needed!
Whatever you do, DON"T use flash band. It's not at all the same as the factory stuff that's in there. And you're right - it's frikkin messy. The bitumen will melt with the first time the floor gets hot from the air passing through underneath from the engine bay and then everything is sticky. The factory stuff has pith instead of bitumen.
Anyhow, the insulation material that Nick is referring to is thin high density foam sheeting. Very similar to the stuff they use for Yoga mats. You can stick it down with vinyl tile adhesive - just paint it on and stick down, doing roughly 1m² areas at a time. The vinyl adhesive allows a short period for adjustment / movement while working, unlike contact adhesive. Alcolin makes one called "Hi-Tack" .... not expensive either and goes a long way, you probably won't need more than a litre.

Yes, sorry, should have been more clear. I used 6mm closed cell foam sheeting from Sondor Foam. I didn't bother to stick it down on the floor - the seats and everything hold it well enough, but in the doors the adhesive will be needed.

I got a Tig beginning of the year, to get around the bottle rental cost I bought a empty bottle off gumtree for about R600. Swopped it out for a full bottle (pay for gas only) and then you don't need to worry about that annoying monthly rental cost!

Re. the noise insulation: I bought some of that closed cell 5mm foam sheet and was about to stick it inside the door outer skin when dad suggested I rather install it with double sided tape to help prevent water being trapped between the foam and sheet metal and hence possible rusting. Any disadvantage to using double sided tape? Does the foam have to be fully bonded to the metal or is merely it's presence in the door required to perform the function? I am also installing the foam to help with speaker acoustics.

The foam also serves to brace the panel so I am quite sure you need to stick it. The double sided tape is not going to last anyway.

Re: First Time Welder Purchaser - Advice Needed!
Agree. If you're worried about rust then give the inner panel a coat of something like stone chip beforehand. IMO the double sided tape, besides coming loose in time, will harbour moisture itself - probably a lot more so than the high density foam.
Hi-tack is water soluble for brush cleaning etc. but once it dries (which is pretty quick) it becomes water impervious, so no water problem there. In fact it's use is recommended for vinyl tiles / sheeting in kitchens and bathrooms where water spillage is common.

Andy, do you know if the Hi-Tack when set is soluble with a certain solvent? I want to be able to remove it with ease if I ever do a full rebuild and I know for a fact that contact adhesive is nigh impossible to get off unless you get out your sandblaster!

And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!
